In the 1950's and 60's, the youth in England customized their motorcycles to make them go faster. At the time, the arterial motorways in England were new and young riders would race between transport cafes. These motorcycles and riders became known as the Cafe Racers.

The tradition of customizing motorcycles to help them go faster in a cafe racer style came to Canada in the late 60's and Cafe Racers became an element on Canadian highways until the dawning of the plastic faring which gave birth to modern sport bikes.

Cafe Racers in the modern age refer to motorcycles from the 50's, 60's and 70's (and some 80's models) which were modified for speed.

The CVMG - Cafe Racer group is a national interest group within the CVMG which is dedicated to the craft of rebuilding vintage motorcycles in a Cafe Racer style.
